Ryan Canavan became an associate of the firm in June 2017. He was born and raised in Ireland and attended Queens University Belfast School of Law (2004) and the Institute of Professional Legal Studies (2006), qualifying as a solicitor in the North of Ireland in 2006. While at University, Ryan was selected to participate in the prestigious Business Education Initiative and spent a year studying at Notre Dame College of Ohio (2002-2003), where he was on the President’s List for the duration of his studies and was awarded a Certificate in International Business Practice with distinction.
Ryan passed the New York Bar exam in 2006. He moved from Ireland to New York in 2007, where he developed skills as a litigator, specializing in general liability defense. Ryan's New York practice focused on the defense of property owners, general contractors and sub-contractors against claims of catastrophic personal injury following construction site accidents. While in New York, Ryan was a member of the Irish American Bar Association, Brehon Law Society and a committee member of both IN-NYC and the Manhattan Gaels Gaelic Football Club.
Ryan relocated to Southern California with his wife Katie, a native of San Diego, in September 2015. After moving to San Diego, Ryan initially worked as a claims analyst for a leader in the insurance run-off industry. In that role, Ryan was responsible for evaluating potential insurance coverage and issuing coverage analysis opinions under a variety of historical policies. He was also responsible for managing highly volatile accounts with multi-million dollar exposures, due to ongoing litigation in the fields of toxic torts, premises liability, products liability, construction defects and sexual molestation.
Ryan was admitted to the California State Bar in 2017 and is licensed to practice in all California State Courts. His practice with Wilson Getty focuses on the defense of general liability matters, including the representation of Skilled Nursing Facilities and Assisted Living Facilities against claims of elder neglect. Ryan's attention to detail ensures that he leaves no stone unturned in providing the best defense available to his clients and he enjoys providing risk management advice to offset the potential for future litigation.
